Illegal road sign

Reported via mobile in the Damaged / Missing / Facing Wrong Way category anonymously at 17:20, Wed 17 July 2024

Sent to West Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. ref: 6242388.

There are signs as you enter and leave the village, which are a green circle with a 20 on a white back ground. These are not the mandatory 30 mph red circle on a white background. The issue is that newer cars will recognise green circle signs as the same as red circle signs and immediately slow the vehicle down to the unauthorised lower speed. This will lead to a collision as the cars behind still travel at the correct 30 mph. These unauthorised signs are appearing in lots of villages and need to be removed before they cause a serious accident.

NB Cars, as well as some people, are red-green colour-blind.

Thank you for your enquiry. We can advise we are trialling an advisory 20mph speed limit scheme within West Northants, instead of formalised 20mph speed limits which tend to be contentious as well as emotive and the supporting evidence researched by the Department for Transport is inconclusive in terms of the benefits delivered. In taking a pragmatic view, WNC therefore remains cautious in terms of implementing enforceable 20mph speed restrictions. However, temporary signs of an advisory nature, alerting or reminding motorists to exercise careful speed management in residential environments can have positive benefits and provide public reassurance for a local community.

These are being implemented primarily in self-contained residential zones where a current posted speed limit of 30mph is already in place. The default ‘advisory’ speed under this scheme is therefore 20 mph in order to encourage motorists to proceed with caution due to the proximity mix of vulnerable road users such as children, cyclists and pedestrians in general. The signs have a green circle, rather than the regulatory red speed signs so as not to make the existing 30mph limit unlawful. They are also endorsed by the local police department.

State changed to: No further action
