Very uneven road, down to clay and virtually impassable without damaging vehicle and dangerous when transporting livestock

This part of the Astwell Road has become extremely unlevel and is now down to the clay subsurface in part. Because of how unlevel the road in at this point it is causing damage to vehicles and tyres, let alone being virtually impossible to navigate when transporting livestock and particularly when wet due to the clay. Furthermore, this is on a hill close to a brook and when trying to navigate this section larger vehicles in particular are slipping back towards the brook. This is particularly dangerous not only for the driver of the vehicle but also horses which are being transported. Given there are a number of equestrian properties on this section of the road, there is a very high likelihood that people will need to potentially transport injured horses, or indeed, if emergency vehicles needed access or to transport an injured person to hospital, it would make this extremely difficult. The road needs leveling and some form of hard top surface to be laid for safety purposes.

  • Investigation: Completed (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Not Started - Thank you for your enquiry. A qualified Highways Inspector has assessed the photo/s and we can confirm that in accordance with the WNC Highways Inspection Manual, the defect meets the requirement for a Priority 4 repair. We will schedule a repair to be completed within 26 weeks. Our current average response time for a Priority 4 repair is 37.3 days.
