A Potholes / Highway Condition problem has been found

Reported via desktop in the Potholes / Highway Condition category by West Northamptonshire Council at 08:21, Thursday 8 August 2024

Sent to West Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. ref: 6330302.

All the curbs have dropped and the pavement is dangerous to walk on for elderly residents. The road has never been touched in 25 years I have lived in Meadow Close. Also Meadow Close is used as a cut through and is very busy there needs to be some kind of speed reduction put in place(speed bumps).

  • Investigation: Completed (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Not Started - Thank you for your enquiry. A qualified Highways Inspector has assessed the location and we can confirm that in accordance with the WNC Highways Inspection Manual, the defect meets the requirement for a Priority 3 repair. We will schedule a repair to be completed within 28 days. Our current average response time for a Priority 3 repair is 11 days.

We do understand the worries that drivers travelling too fast can have, especially in close-knit residential areas. A driver should know from the Highway Code, that in built-up places the speed limit is automatically 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise indicated. These roads do not have repeated 30mph speed limit signs as they are identified by the presence of street lighting.

Only the police would have the ability to decide on taking appropriate action against drivers that may be breaking road traffic laws and can consider operating at different locations with mobile speed camera enforcement, speed surveys and data gathering. Such requests can be done via the local Neighbourhood Policing Team by calling the non-emergency number 101 or by following the link on the Northants Police website.

Suggestions to physically slow down traffic within Northampton does have merit, however it must be pointed out that permanent traffic calming measures such as build-outs, chicanes, speed humps etc. are expensive to install and maintain. Any traffic calming would require agreement by the elected Councillors, public consultation on the proposals and from our experience sadly these may not be entirely popular with all the local residents, as they could create on-street parking restrictions, increase in traffic noise outside properties and a possible rise in air pollution. Introducing such highway measures will also do little to stop inconsiderate and/or inexperienced drivers, determined ‘joy riders’ or ‘outlaw bikers’ etc. or individuals from speeding or careless driving in general.
