    State changed to: Investigating

  • Investigation: Ongoing - Thank you for your enquiry. West Northants received approximately 140mm of rain over a short period of time, resulting in severe flash flooding in many areas. The heavy rainfall had the ability to overwhelm the surface water drainage system. If your report is a repeat flooding incident, please could update this enquiry with further information, so that we can investigate. If this is not a repeat incident, we will close the enquiry after 7 days and the highways team will continue to monitor the location

  • Please note that the photos show the situation on the Sunday morning, well in advance of the "main event" later in the day, which resulted in an "Emergency Closure" of this stretch of carriageway. There is indeed a "historic and recurring problem" in this location, as can be seen by referring to reports 2327540, 2392685, 2801763, 3926781, 3991492, 4330311 and 5015992. In short, the gully system in this location is being overwhelmed on a regular basis, by moderate rainfall, not just by the 140mm of rain which fell on the Sunday evening. "Cyclic cleansing" is only addressing the symptoms, not the underlying cause, which would appear to be bad design dating back to the 1970s, when this stretch of road was constructed, on an embankment!
