Discharge of huge amounts of water onto the road
Reported via desktop in the Flooding category anonymously at 14:24, Mon 23 September 2024
Sent to West Northamptonshire Council 1 hour, 55 minutes later. ref: 6499746.
Since the development began there have been repeated problems from the large amount of water discharged or rerouted from other areas, which then floods Burcote Road. Sunday morning the flood was bad enough to cut the hamlet off from Towcester for several hours, yet again. This kind of flooding never happened before the development. Excess water diverted from other areas has been rerouted into the road drainage system and totally overwhelming the culverts. Plus springs from the development have an altered course, adding to the burden of water by pouring off the fields down the footpath. The culverts are far too small to carry all the extra water diverted to this area. The whole system needs considerably uprating to cope with the excess water diverted from an underground waterway that was bypassed by the building work. The system should have been uprated before the amount of water diverted was so massively increased.

Monday the flood was again very deep and dangerous and overflowing onto the housing estate opposite. A great deal of water is being discharged from the site without being properly or safely directed. This is not a quick fix. It need considerable engineering work to rectify.

It floods here so often that the metal flood sign remains permanently. Having reported this to various authorities it has been dismissed on this occasion as being due to exceptional weather. Unfortunately this doesn't account for every other flood in the last few years. Each time, the culvert is cleaned out but this isn't enough. The large increase in water redirected to this little culvert overwhelms it. The system needs completely upgrading.

More water is flooding off the development onto the road again today. Also the redirected water from the development is overwhelming the small culvert again.

It's worse again. It will obviously become more of a problem over the winter as there is now more water coming from the development than last year, either rerouted or run off. The pictures are from today and show some of the run off and the overloaded culvert. The road is also blocked again trapping residents.

Investigation: Completed (Defect Found) - Thank you for your enquiry. West Northants received approximately 140mm of rain over a short period of time, resulting in severe flash flooding in many areas. The heavy rainfall had the ability to overwhelm the surface water drainage system. If your report is a repeat flooding incident, please could update this enquiry with further information, so that we can investigate. If this is not a repeat incident, we will close the enquiry after 7 days and the highways team will continue to monitor the location ,the drains at this location were cleaned 23/9/24

I may have identified the main problem. To the west of the flood site in the development area there are springs. Previously these would have drained into the field and entered underground waterways. But the site is now surfaced with many paths and a very large bridleway which stop the water draining naturally. Shedding water now travels across the footpath system visibly eroding the surface and flooding down to the road overwhelming both culverts. Without sufficient drainage on the eastern side of the road this accumulates as a flood.

Friday 4 Oct the drainage ditches and channels were dug out. Thank you. This is a useful first step as it will help drain the road faster during a flood. However, run off from the development site will still pour into the gardens in Dove Close and across the road and from there will still flood Temple Close. And the excess water channeled to the tiny culvert will still overflow onto the road. But it is a rapid response and a good start.

Flooding Temple close and threatening homes as a result of this ongoing issue yet again tonight. Please upgrade status so remedial work is carried out immediately, not in 2025. Not good enough as we have been dealing with this ongoing issue - through no fault of our own - for the past 3+ years

The tiny map shows the area of Burcote Road that keeps flooding and highlights the routes of water courses (found by a local dowser several decades ago) that have always existed in the area but used to drain successfully before development started. The current flooding is caused by ignoring the natural water flow so that run off (no surprise) follows the exact same route as the old water courses. The water course need to be channeled, but this can only be done successfully by knowing the springs and where the water comes from.
