You can also keep up to date on highways by following us on Facebook and Twitter @wnhighwaysThank you for your enquiry. Hitting a domesticated or wild animal with your vehicle is a rare event, but can naturally be very stressful. The law says that if you hit an animal which is covered by The Road Traffic Act 1988 – namely, dogs, goats, horses, cattle, donkeys, mules, sheep and pigs you are legally required to report it to the police. But if you hit an animal not mentioned in the Road Traffic Act, squirrels, deer, foxes, badgers or birds for example, drivers are not required by law to report it (although it could help to save the life of these creatures if a driver on our county network is prepared to report the incident to the RSPCA/RSPB).
Our Road Safety team routinely monitor the collision data whereby the Police’s safer roads team will notify us of any concerns they may have. Presently, we are not aware of any instances or emerging patterns of Deer collisions in the vicinity of this part of the road network. Therefore, we are unable to consider the imposition of Deer warning signs as requested.
Perhaps it would be prudent to seek support from the British Deer Society who may be able to put forward a case if they could identify areas with a proven history of reported collisions. Please use the following link for their contact details; Contact Us - The British Deer Society (bds.org.uk)
