Request for Weighted Gate
Reported via mobile in the Stile-Damaged/Missing category anonymously at 23:01, Fri 5 December 2025
Sent to West Northamptonshire Council 3 days, 19 hours, 47 minutes later. ref: 8508372.
Please can this strike be replaced with a weighted gate which can be easily used by the elderly and large dogs.
My mother 68yrs old had to turn back earlier this week due to struggling to climb over the strike herself and also being unable to get her large dog to jump over the stile.
A weighted gate would ensure that this PROW can be used by the maximum number of people.

Investigation: Completed (Highways to Monitor, Routine Inspection Programme) - Thank you for your enquiry. A qualified Highways Inspector has assessed the location, and we can confirm that dogs are considered a ‘natural accompaniment’ and can be taken on public rights of way. However, despite the fact that a dog is a ‘natural accompaniment’ to users of rights of way, the law doesn’t require stiles to be dog friendly as it is the dog’s keeper who has the right of passage, not the dog. With this in mind we are afraid that landowners do not have a duty to provide easy access for dogs and we cannot enforce the matter. We shall continue to monitor this route as part of our rights of way inspection schedule.
